This trip will be to Ogawayama, a rock climbers paradise as well as an amazing hiking base-camp. We will be camping in the Mawarimedaira Campground (廻り目平) one of the best campsites in Japan. We are heading up a could days early to set up camp before the crowds arrive and will have a site set up away from the main camping area. This campsite is unique in that you can have traditional campfire rings and set up tents anywhere on the site. We will have a comfortable base-camp setup including large camping tents, hammocks, and a slack line to test your balance.
The main goals of this trip include camping in style, climbing Kinpu-san one of the 100 famous mountains, and trying out rock climbing and bouldering.
We'll be eating well in camp cooking over a fire, baking in a dutch oven, and barbecuing up a great variety of meat and veggies.
Friday Night - Due to the crazy traffic at the start of Golden Week, we will be getting out of town on Friday night and driving up. Since our camp will already be set up, it will be easy to just move in.
Saturday: There is no rush on this day and we can have a relaxing morning. The plan for this day is to explore the nearby craggy peaks doing an easy loop hike above the camp site. There will be plenty of opportunities for rock scrambling to get up to high view points. Depending on time and weather we may also have some time to try out some of the local bouldering problems. Dinner will be BBQ skewers cooked over the campfire grill.
Sunday: This is our big hiking day and we will be heading up to the summit of Kinpu-san (金峰山), one of the 100 famous mountains. The hike is rated 1C and is not technically difficult, but has a distance of around 14km total. Much of this distance is actually covered on a flat riverside trail that goes by quick and easy. As we climb up, we head through various alpine zones, with the summit being above tree line. The views are amazing with views of Yatsugadake, the Japanese Alps, and Mt. Fuji all possible. The summit is wide and open and great for relaxing in the sunshine while having a picnic.
After descending from the peak we'll begin preparing the campfire to cook up dinner in the dutch oven. Everything tastes great from a dutch oven and you will really enjoy the cooking and eating process. We want to get everyone involved.
Monday: After breakfast we'll head over to Phoenix Rock for some beginner level rock climbing. Even if you have never tried it before you will enjoy it. There are mostly easy routes and a few intermediate routes. We'll climb for a few hours and then head back to camp to pack up and have lunch before beginning the drive back.
Depending on traffic conditions (likely to be bad) we may take the back route through Chichibu and drop everyone off at Hanno station which has direct trains to Ikebukuro and Yokohama. This is quite likely the best option to get everyone home without spending 6 hours driving in holiday traffic, but we will keep the plan flexible.
