We are heading up to the Tohoku border area to climb two of the 100 famous mountains of Japan that have very difficult access. We have timed this trip to hit the peak of the fall colors as well, and we will be camping in a campground between the two mountains and day hiking on Saturday and Sunday with light packs.
Friday Night
We will meet up in Hanno and then spend the night at our Hiker's B&B so we will be able to get an early start and avoid traffic problems.
Saturday
We will depart the B&B at 5 a.m. and then make the drive up the Tohoku highway towards Hiuchi-ga-dake (燧ヶ岳) on the northern border of Oze National Park. We will stop at a highway rest area on the way for breakfast.
Hiuchi is not a technically difficult mountain, though we will be climbing the North Ridge which starts out with some board walks but does gain 750 meters of elevation over 5km to reach the top, making it a solid 1B level climb. Most of the time is also spent above the trees with wetland areas visible and plenty of opportunities to see wild birds. After returning back the way we came, we will make the short drive to our campground and set up for the night.
Plan to eat an awesome dinner by the campfire and a special dessert cooked in the dutch oven. Plenty of time to socialize by the campfire and enjoy a beverage of your choice under the stars.
Sunday
We will get an early start and eat a quick breakfast and pack up our camping gear before heading out for the hike. The trailhead for Aizu Komagadake (会津駒ヶ岳) is a short drive away, and we plan to be hiking by 8:30 a.m. The total distance of the hike is 10km with 1,000 meters of elevation gain, making this a level 1C hike. The climbing is relatively gentle, but constant and will provide a good work out for the day. We start out in the trees with plenty of color, and quickly work our way up to tree line where there are 360 degree views as we hike along the ridge to the summit.
After the summit, we head back to the car along the same route and then clean up and begin the drive back to Tokyo.
Campground Notes
-We have a limited number of tents for individuals. If you want to have a private tent, please confirm availability or provide your own tent.
-Showers are available at the camp ground for a small fee
