Shibutsu-san is one of the 100 famous mountains located in Gunma prefecture on the Southwestern end of Oze National Park. This hike gives you a good taste of everything Oze has to offer and you will have a chance to see the famous marshland and wildflowers while climbing the 4th highest peak of Gunma Prefecture.
We will meet up on Friday night in Ikebukuro and then travel up to the mountains for to camp out in at a Michi-no-eki with a large roof. Saturday morning we get up early have breakfast and then head to the parking area for Oze. We will need to transfer to a local hiking bus for the last 7km as no vehicles are allowed up to the upper parking lot during the summer season to avoid congestion and accidents.
The hiking distance is just under 10.5km with 900 meters of elevation gained and lost. The beginning of the hike is basically flat losing a bit of elevation to get into the Oze Marshland. There is a nice hut with refreshments available to enjoy before starting our big ascent.
The climb up is strenuous but we pass through various zones of forest and eventually breaking into the alpine zone around 2,000M leaving the trees behind and getting some 360 degree views. Lunch will be on the summit. The descent will but much more gentle than the climb and we will be back around 2:30 p.m. to catch another bus. Time and state of emergency depending we will stop by a hot spring and then make the trip back to Tokyo.
After the hike we will stop by a hot spring if time allows before dropping everyone off at Nerima station by 7:30 p.m.
