Ryogami-san is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, and we will be climbing one of the classic routes on the mountain, the Hinata Gorge Route (日向大谷).
This route starts out in a valley of cypress and cedar trees, but after climbing a bit things change to a wild forest full of a huge variety of trees which should be at their peak of fall colors. Just a bit over halfway through the ascent we come to a very old spring water fed well where it's possible to refill on great tasting spring water.
From the well it's a short hike up to a mountain hut where we will take a break before the final ascent. The last part of the climb will feature some rock scrambling, though nothing technical there are chains in place to assist with this part. This is definitely the most exciting part of the hike and features some great views of the valley as we are climbing up the final rock ridge.
The route is an out and back route, with a total distance of around 10 km with 800 meters of elevation.
After the climb we'll head to a hot spring to relax and warm up after a tough day on the mountain before heading home. Another plus of this hike is we will be able to jump on the highway after the usual Sunday traffic jam areas making for a smooth ride home.
Drop off after the trip will be Hanno Station.
