This is a great moderate level overnight hike good for fit beginners and experienced people looking to spend the weekend backpacking in the South Alps. This hike features two of the 100 famous mountains and an amazing campsite to base out of.
4 mountain hut spaces are available for Sunday night for 6,800~10,000 yen depending on meals. Those staying in the hut will receive a 1,000 yen discount on the trip fee
Sunday:
By heading up to the mountains on Saturday night, we'll be able to get an early start and catch the first bus up to the pass. The hike to our campsite is a flat 10 minute walk along the creek, so feel free to bring a few luxury items along. We'll set up camp and then start the hike up to the summit of Kaikoma-ga-take. This will be a loop route heading up from the south side with a bit of exciting scrambling near the top. Then we drop back down via the east ridge ending back at the hut and will have the afternoon and evening to relax in this great high mountain campsite.
Sunday:
Day two will take us up to the summit of Senjo-ga-take which is just over 3,000 meters. The climb is not steep and part of the route is a loop to keep things interesting. We will be above tree line from 2,500 or so and the views and hiking up there are absolutely incredible. We do pass a hut on the way down where we can stop for a snack and beverage and often see Ptarmigan (雷鳥)in this area. After getting back to the pass we'll grab our camping gear and aim to take the 1:30 p.m. bus back down the mountain. We'll make a quick hot spring stop and then head back to Tokyo.
