To start off the hiking season we are heading to the South Alps on the West side of Mt. Fuji for a special hike. We will be hiking up Shichimen-zan a historical pilgrimage climb and spend a night at a temple that has been around since the 1300's.
The hike itself is moderate with a total of 1,300 meters of elevation gained during the climb (1,000M on the first day), and a total distance of about 14km. This is a one way loop hike, so the scenery will also be changing throughout.
Saturday
The hike to the temple takes approximately 4 hours. The hike passes by multiple temples and shrines as well as sacred trees and other various historical sites along the climb. After passing by the temple we will go ahead and ascend to the summit of Shichimenzan as usually there is plenty of time remaining in the day to do this then head back to the temple. Once we arrive we'll check in and can spend some time relaxing until dinner. After dinner there will be an evening ceremony that we are all welcome to participate in.
Sunday
We will wake up early so we can see the sun rising behind the shoulder of Mt. Fuji from the temple. In April the sun rises directly next to the summit of Mt. Fuji making for a very impressive sunrise view. After sunrise, we'll have breakfast in the temple, then check out and make our way back down the mountain via a different route that will give us a full loop of the Shichimen area. On the way back we will stop by a large hot spring which has great food and beer before making the trip back to Tokyo.
Both of the meals provided by the temple are vegetarian Shojin Ryori food.
There is the possibility of snow on the trail, and if so we will provide crampons for anyone that needs, but the trail is not technical even with snow.
