This is a great moderate level 2 night hike good for fit beginners and experienced people looking to spend the 3 day weekend backpacking in the North Alps. This hike features multiple peaks including one of the 100 famous mountains and a high mountain hot spring.
Mountain huts are available each night for anyone who wishes to travel light for 6,500~7,000 yen per night.
Saturday:
By heading up to the mountains on Friday night, we'll be able to get an early start and take our time to get up to our campsite and pick out a great campsite before others arrive. Total hiking distance is just over 5 km this day but there will be about 1,300 meters of elevation gained. This is a beautiful hike and we will take it at a slow moderate pace to appreciate the mountain scenery. The greatest feature of this day will be climbing up the Daisekkei (大雪渓),a year round permanent snow field. This part is not technical or steep, but 4 or 6 point crampons are needed for this. After setting up our camp just below the summit, we'll hang out on the summit with beer or other beverage of your choice from the nearby hut.
Sunday:
Day 2 of our trek is fairly relaxed with minimal elevation gained and lost. We'll be heading south from Shirouma across 2 peaks with a high point at Yari-ga-dake (Not that Yari!) of 2,903 meters. From there it will be a gentle descent to Yari-Onsen where we will set up our camp and spend the remainder of the day relaxing in the hot spring where there will be cold beer on tap as well. Onsen has mixed bath as well as women only bath, and bathing suit is ok!
Monday:
In the morning there will be time for one more dip in the hot spring before packing things up and heading down the mountain. This final day will be about 6km and there will be a mostly flat snowfield crossing and we'll see an amazing waterfall along the way as well as hike through an amphitheater surrounded by alpine peaks. After getting back to the car, one more dip in a local hot spring with views of the Alps before making the drive back home.
