This is a great moderate level overnight snow climb good for fit beginners and experienced people looking to spend the start of Golden week climbing in the North Alps. We will provide introductory instruction if you haven't used an ice axe or crampons before. The descent will be via sled which is amazingly fun, or ski / snowboard if you want to carry them up.
Mountain huts are available each night for anyone who wishes to travel light for 6,500~7,000 yen per night.
Saturday:
By heading up to the mountains on Friday night, we'll be able to get an early start and take our time to get up to our campsite and pick out a great campsite before others arrive. Total hiking distance is just over 5 km this day but there will be about 1,300 meters of elevation gained. This is a beautiful hike and we will take it at a slow moderate pace to appreciate the mountain scenery. The greatest feature of this day will be climbing up the Daisekkei (大雪渓),a year round permanent snow field. This part is not technical or steep, crampons are needed for this. After setting up our camp just below the summit, we'll hang out on the summit with beer or other beverage of your choice from the nearby hut.
Sunday:
Day 2 of our trek is fairly relaxed with a not so early start. Sunrise view is amazing if the weather cooperates. After breakfast we'll pack up our tents and bags and do some sledding practice on a small slope to practice controlling sleds with the ice axe then we'll zoom down the giant snow field, making it down what took hours to get up to just 30 minutes of fun sliding. After getting back to the car we'll head to a hot spring to get cleaned up before making the drive back to Tokyo getting back at a decent hour.
