This is a great intermediate level snow climbing trip for those looking to test their skills in the Northern Alps while still covered in snow. Mt. Shirouma is one of the 100 famous mountains, and the scenery from the peak is some of the best the Alps has to offer.
This climb is a great snow climb requiring basic ice axe and crampon skills. We can review these skills during the climb for those who need a bit of practice. BC ski is also an option and it is generally no problem to reach the summit on skis during the spring season.
Friday Night - So we can avoid Saturday morning traffic, we will stay at the Hiker's B&B in Hanno. Meet up will be 9 p.m. on Friday night, and then futons are provided for this night. We will divide gear up in the evening so we will be ready to climb on Saturday.
Saturday- We'll get up early and depart and make a breakfast stop along the way. After arriving at the trail head it's one a 2 hour hike to our base camp site where we will spend a bit of timing digging tent platforms and setting up our camp. There will also be plenty of time to relax in the sun at our base-camp surrounded by high snowy peaks.
The afternoon will be spent reviewing mountaineering skills, more advanced ice axe and crampon techniques.
Sunday- We will get an alpine start, setting off around 4 a.m. with headlights and start climbing up the main snow valley so we can get up and down before the snow softens up making walking more difficult. It will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach the summit, where we will stop for a bit before heading back the way we came. For those on skis or snowboard, this will be an exciting descent, and one of the longest vertical runs possible in Japan. For those without skis we will have special glissading sleds available for everyone and will instruct everyone in how to safely sled down the mountain.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
