This is one of our more advanced level snow climbs requiring a section of roped climbing near the summit. Mt. Shirouma is one of the 100 famous mountains, and the scenery from the peak is some of the best the Alps has to offer.
All participants on this trip are required to have strong fitness and extensive snow climbing experience using ice axe and crampons. We are prioritizing sign-ups to people who have been on our alpine climbs this season and limiting the trip to only 5 people.
Wednesday Night - So we can avoid Golden Week morning traffic, we will drive out to Hakuba and set up camp at the trailhead sleeping in tents by the car. This trip leaves a bit earlier than usual so we can get plenty of rest as Thursday is going to be a very early start.
Thursday- We will wake up at 3:45 a.m. and pack up our tents and begin the hike no later than 4:30 a.m. We'll stop and eat breakfast on the trail before we begin the ascent of the main ridge. Once we begin the climb it starts of on a gentle and wide ridge gradually getting steeper and narrower as we go. This is an exciting climb with some exposure and amazing views throughout. Rest spots are few and far between so we will be moving slow and steady. Just below the summit there is a steep 65 degree snow wall that will require us to rope up and place snow protection as we climb. This is one of the steepest snow faces in Japan and is very exciting to climb, and it tops out right on the summit of Shirouma.
After a brief rest and some photos we begin our descent down the big snow valley (大雪渓). We will make use of small sleds to speed up our descent. We plan to be back at the car by 3 p.m. and will then stop by a hot spring before making the drive back to Tokyo.
*In the event of poor weather or significant avalanche risk conditions May 5th (Wed) is reserved as a back up date for this climb.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
