This trip is put together to teach basic ice axe and crampons skills as well as winter camping skills for beginner winter mountaineers. Experienced climbers would also benefit from reviewing this material at the beginning of the season before starting up bigger more demanding climbs.
Shirouma is a great climb since the ski lifts will take us up to the top of the ridge and all of our climbing will be spent above tree line with amazing views of the snowy North Alps. We'll hike about half-way to the peak of Shirouma and set up camp next to Shirouma phond that will be sheltered from wind and also has a great slope to practice ice axe skills on. Saturday afternoon after setting up camp will be spent learning the following skills.
Winter Climbing Skills Content
Friday Night- Meeting time will be decided based on participants availability, but we will do pick ups in Yokohama, Futakotamagawa, and Chofu. We'll drive up to Matsumoto and camp out for the evening.
Saturday- We'll get up early and after breakfast get on the gondola and head up to Tsugaike on the north side of Shirouma and take a gondola to the top of the ski resort to start our approach.
The hike in to the campsite is not very strenuous and we'll get to enjoy the views if the weather is nice.
Sunday- After breakfast we'll get an early start and make our way up to the summit of Shirouma-dake. This will be a great chance to make use of the techniques learned on Saturday and to climb one of the 100 famous mountains in the snow. After reaching the summit, we head back, take down our tents and then head back to the lifts. Sledding down parts of the return climb are definitely an option to keep things moving quickly and is super fun.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
