We are planning to head to the South Alps to climb two classic alpine classics Senjogatake (仙丈ケ岳)and Kaikomagatake (甲斐駒ヶ岳). These peaks are not technically difficult, it is a big expedition with 1 day approach and another day to get back out, and the weather and snow conditions can certainly turn these mountains into a real epic. Previous snow hiking experience is required to join as well as all of the appropriate equipment.
Thursday- We need to depart Thursday night the 30th to beat the new year traffic out of Tokyo and get closer to the trailhead so we can have a leisurely approach on Friday.
Friday- We'll get an early start and have breakfast and hot coffee at a local convenience store before heading to the trailhead. This day is not particularly difficult or long as it involves hiking 12km with 800m of elevation gain on a forest road to get up to the Kitazawa Pass where we will set up our basecamp for the next 3 nights. This means no hard climbing with heavy backpacks.
Saturday- We will wake up around 4;30 a.m. and start making breakfast, and preparing for the climb, with a plan to depart camp no later than 6:30 a.m. We'll only take what we need for the day so we can climb light and fast. We plan to climb Senjo on Saturday which is the easier of the two climbs. Total distance is 5km each way with just under 1,000 meters of elevation gained. We should be back at camp before 3 p.m.
Sunday- Kaikoma is a bit more difficult with some rocky sections on ascent. If snow levels are typical of new years period then it should not be too much trouble and the plan is to do a loop route on the mountain. The plan is to climb the south-west ridge up to Komatsu-pass and then continue on to the summit. This would involve about 850 meters of elevation gained with the hardest climbing in the first 3 hours climbing up from our campsite. If snow conditions permit then we will descend from the Komatsu-pass to Sen-sui pass and back to the campsite.
Monday- We don't have to get up too early, but after breakfast we'll pack up all of our gear and head back to the car and hit a hot spring before making the drive back to Tokyo getting back home at a decent time.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
