On this trip we are headed up to the Nikko area to climb Sukai-san and Koushin-zan. The hiking possibilities around the hut are quite varied, and there is something for every level. One of the main highlights of this trip will be an ascent up Nokogiri-Yama, one of the hundred famous mountains of Tochigi Prefecture that will involve some chains and ladders to reach the main that ascends Sukai-san.

Once we arrive at the trail head, we only have to carry our luggage for 6km before arriving at the hut. After having lunch and a break at the hut, we'll pack some light hiking bags and do a quick day hike around the hut. The hike will involve some chain sections through the rocky faces of Koushin-zan that also features some very unique rock formations and caves.
Sunday will be a very big hiking day with our ascent starting before sunrise and breakfast on the trail. With our light day packs, we'll make the trek up to Yakushi-dake and Noko-giri-yama which features a good bit of climbing including some chains and ladders, but a lot of great views. From the top of Noko-giri it's a relatively short hike up to the summit of Sukai-san. We will then descend back to our hut via a more gentle route through a beautiful oak forest that should be at it's peak for fall colors. After lunch at the hut, we'll make our way back to the van and stop by a hot spring before heading back to Tokyo.
