Taiwan is a sub-tropical island just a short flight away that offers some amazing outdoor adventure activities. On this trip we will explore the Alishan National Park, one of the most scenic areas in the country, and climb the highest Peak, Yushan which stands at 3,952 meters almost 200 meters higher than Mt. Fuji. Yushan also is not a volcano and has some fun scrambling sections near the top making this a very fun climb.
We will also spend an evening and morning in Taipei exploring some of the local sites and eating some of the amazing food that's available before flying back to Tokyo.
Wednesday 11/2:
Our flight departs at 10 p.m. from Narita, so everyone will need to arrive at the airport around 8:30 p.m. After arriving in Taipei we will camp out in the airport till morning.
Thursday 11/3:
In the morning we will pick up our rental van when the shops open in the airport and head straight for Alishan. We will set up camp at a local campground with hot spring just outside of the national park. After getting settled in we'll head into the park for some hiking.
The planned hikes for this day include the Giant Trees Trail and the Shouzhen temple.
Friday:
This is our big climbing day to head up to the summit of Yushan and back down in a day. To be able to do this in one day we'll wake up before sunrise and head to the trailhead to get an early start. Total distance of the hike is approximately 20 km with plenty of elevation gained, but it's spread out making the hike not so steep until near the summit. Near the summit there will be some rock scrambling and chains, but it's nothing too technical, just enough to keep things fun and interesting.
During the hike there will be plenty of opportunities to take breaks, but it will be a nice challenge.
Saturday:
We will have one more early morning to head up to see the sunrise from the top of Zhushan. The sunrise from here is spectacular with the sun rise behind Yushan which we will have climbed the previous day. After sunrise there will be some time for hiking around the area before heading to our campsite to pack everything up.
From our campground we'll head to Taipei and we'll have some time to explore the local sites. We will stay at Star Hostel near Taipei Main Station putting us right in the middle of things.
Sunday:
You'll have the option to sleep in if you like or head out and explore the neighborhood in the morning, but we'll need to start heading to the airport around 10:30 a.m. Our flight gets us back in Narita around 5p.m. leaving plenty of time to get back home and get ready for the work week that is to come.
