Taiwan is a sub-tropical island just a short flight away that offers some amazing outdoor adventure activities. On this trip we will explore the Shei-pa National Park, one of the most scenic areas in the country, and climb 5 different peaks standing over 3,000 meters.
We will also spend an evening and morning in Taipei exploring some of the local sites and eating some of the amazing food that's available before flying back to Tokyo.
*The deadline for applying to this trip is October 10th as we need to apply for permits for the trip one month in advance to guarantee space in the huts.
*Please note we are not including flights in this trip to give you some flexibility to spend extra time in Taiwan if you'd like and to reduce the consumption tax you would have to pay as well.
Thursday 11/15:
We can do airport pickups for flights arriving after 6 p.m. Lodging will be just short drive from the airport at a local guesthouse. If you plan to arrive in Taiwan earlier we can discuss options for meeting up with the group. See recommended flights below.
Lodging: Ours Hostel Taoyuan Airport
Friday 11/16:
We will need to depart early at 7 a.m. for the 3 hour drive to Wuling Recreation area which will be the start of our hike. Breakfast and coffee will be picked up at a highway stop along the way. There will also be a chance to stop by a shop to pick up hiking snacks / lunch stuff as well.
The hiking route will start at Wuling Villa and start out with a gentle forest hike to get warmed up, then the real climbing begins. The total hiking distance is about 4km but with 1,500 meters of elevation, this will definitely not be a short walk. This will be the most challenging part of the whole trip, but eventually you will be rewarded with views above the trees and clouds after reaching 3,000 meters.
The peak of the day will be Mt. Tao standing at 3,324 meters, and after visiting this summit we will drop down to the Taochan cabin just below the summit where we will spend the night.
Saturday 11/17:
After breakfast we will leave our heavy luggage and go for an out and back hike across 2 more peaks Mt. Shilun (3,194m) and Mt. (Kalaye 3,133m). The peaks are actually lower than Mt. Tao, but the ridge offers some amazing views of the entire national park.
After returning to the Taochan cabin for lunch, we'll pack up all our gear for a hike over the summit of Mt. Chiyou (3,303m) and then on to the Xinda shelter where we will spend the night.
Sunday 11/18:
We'll get an early start this day as this will be the most technical peak of the trip, though with just light day packs. From the Xinda Shelter we hike west to Mt. Pintian (3,524m). The final 300 meters of the ascent are a vertical cliff face but the trail features solid foot holds and a hand line to assist with the ascent. After spending some time on the top we head back the way we came carefully descending the fixed ropes and walking back to the Xinda Shelter to pack our gear.
The descent back to Wuling Villa will be via a different ridge trail than we originally ascended to keep things a bit more interesting. It should take about 3 hours from the lodge to descend back to the van.
After getting off the mountain we'll head into Taipei where we will have the evening to explore the city, enjoy some night markets and street food.
Lodging: Angel's Hostel in the Central Ximen District.
Monday 11/19:
We will offer a ride to the airport to anyone departing Taipei after noon leaving Taipei around 10:00 a.m. If you plan to spend more time in the city we can help you with information for public transport options to get back to the airport.
Recommended Flights:
As of this writing these flights were listed at around 20,000 yen for round trip tickets. These are LCC flights, so if your luggage exceeds the carry on size there will be extra fees.
