Tateshina is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Jpaan. It sits off to the side of the Yatsugadake range and overlooks the entire 8 peaks of Yatsugadake and also offers views of the Southern to Northern Japanese Alps and even Fuji on a clear day. This is planned to be a
We will be climbing up the southern ridge of the mountain moving through various alpine zones as we climb up 800 meters to the summit which stands at 2,531 meters. There will be some rocky sections down low, but nothing technical. The most interesting part of this hike will be seeing how the environment changes over the 800 meters from thick forest to treeless alpine terrain.
Total distance hiked ont he day is 8km. The lower part of the mountain may or may not have snow, but we will start hiking on the snow from around 2,000 meters. This may change a bit depending on what the weather does in March.
Crampons will be provided at no extra charge for those who need, but please bring trekking poles along to help with balance while hiking on snow. Ice axe is also an option if you prefer that as well.
After the the hike we'll make a short drive to a local hot spring (小斉の湯) to warm up and relax before making the drive back to Tokyo. This hot spring is unique as there are many small outdoor baths to choose from on the mountainside. Stay in one, or visit as many as you'd like.
