We are headed to the alpine playground of Tateyama for a winter warm-up camp. We will set up our basecamp in Raicho-sawa (雷鳥沢) which will be filled with snow and surrounded by snowy peaks. This is as comfortable as snow camping can get as there is a hot spring just a short walk away from our camp. We are setting our eyes on two main climbing goals, the 3 peaks of Tateyama (立山三山), and Oku-Dainichi-Dake (奥大日岳)
There is a hot spring available for a small fee just a short walk from the campground so if you really need to warm up before heading to sleep there are options.
Friday Night - We will be getting out of town on Friday night and driving up. We will camp out at a Road station a short drive from the Alpen-Route entrance.
Saturday: Our morning will start off a little hectic with us trying to get on the Alpen route early taking a trolley bus through the mountains to Kurobe Dam where we will walk across the dam and see the huge spring flows coming out of this engineering marvel. Then it's on to a cable car to move up the mountain, then a ropeway to get even higher, and another tunnel trolley bus to take us to Murodo. If you have never taken the Alpen Route before you will be impressed with the transport system and the views throughout.
After arriving in Murodo, it's just a short walk to our basecamp site where we will dig out a great camp with snow tables, wind walls for the tents.
The rest of the afternoon will be spent learning and/or reviewing winter mountaineering skills. Ice axe use, crampons, self arrest and such. We will also learn and practice the basics of avalanche beacon use and rescue shoveling.
Sunday: This will be our big mountaineering day. The plan is to climb a loop across the three sacred peaks of Tateyama. The route will start from our campsite climbing up the Northwest Ridge above Raicho-sawa to Bessan. From there we follow the main route of Tateyama up and over the 3 peaks with the highest peak featuring a sacred Shinto Shrine. Tateyama is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan and one of the 3 most sacred mountains in the Shinto religion. Our descent will be along the main Southwest ridge heading back into Murodo where there will be a chance to pick up any treats or beverages you might need for the evening.
We will cook up a great dinner to recharge after this climb.
Monday: On our final day, we will get an early alpine start to head up Oku-Dainichi-Dake. This will be an out and back climb along the East Ridge of the mountain. This mountain features gigantic cornices and are an amazing site to see. The total hiking time this day is approximately 5~5.5 hours. After returning to camp, we'll pack up and begin our descent back down the Alpen Route, hit a hot spring on the way home.
*Ice axe and crampon rentals available for free
*Winter sleeping bag rentals might be available for 1,500 yen but extremely limited.
*Avalanche beacon is required for mountaineering in Tateyama during the snow season. We can introduce some affordable rental options if you need for around 3,500 yen.
Tents: We have mountaineering tents available, but do not have individual tents available, only shared tents. We can help arrange solo rental tents for around 3~4,000 yen per tent for anyone who prefers an individual tent.
