12/11 (Sat) Tengu-dake Winter Warm-up - Winter Mountaineering Intro and Review

This trip is put together to teach basic ice axe and crampons skills as well as winter camping skills for beginner winter mountaineers. Experienced climbers would also benefit from reviewing this material at the beginning of the season before starting up bigger more demanding climbs.

Tengu-dake is a great climb with a short approach. We will be climbing up the West Ridge of Tengu-Dake which is not technical but offers some amazing scenery and is a good introduction to winter climbing. The route starts out in forest quickly gaining the main ridge and then eventually hiking up to tree line. We will practice ice axe skills when we get up to a spot with sufficient snow and then continue climbing up to the top.

The descent is via a more gentle route passing by the Kuro-Yori Hutte where there will be an opportunity for snacks and a hot drink before descending back to the car which is conveniently parked right by a hot spring where we'll warm up before the the drive home.

Winter Climbing Skills Content
  • Ice Axe Self Belay and Self Arrest
  • Walking on Crampons, climbing and descending
  • Crampon and axe techniques for steep snow and ice (French Technique, front pointing, low dagger position)

Friday- We will head out on Friday night and camp out at the Kobuchi-zawa Michi-no Eki. Tents are recommended and we have a few rentals available. Sleeping bag should be rated for 0C or warmer.

Saturday- We will get an early start grabbing breakfast and hot coffee at a convenience store and then heading up to the trailhead with the plan to get started hiking up around 6:45 a.m. The climb to the summit is 3 to plus skills practice time. Then it's about a 45 minute walk to the Kuroyori Hutte where we will stop for lunch and hot drinks. From there it's about 90 minutes back to the car.

After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after a day in the snow.
