This trip is put together to teach basic ice axe and crampons skills as well as winter camping skills for beginner winter mountaineers. Experienced climbers would also benefit from reviewing this material at the beginning of the season before starting up bigger more demanding climbs.
Tengu-dake is a great climb with a short approach to our base with a mountain hut and a great campsite and practice area. If you wish to have the winter camping experience, we'll provide tents and have rental sleeping bags available.
Ice axe and crampon rentals are also available for 2,000 yen for the set, or 1,000 yen for individual items.
Fees for the mountain hut are 5,300 yen per person if you do not wish to camp.
Winter Climbing Skills Content
Saturday- We'll meet up early and drive out to the mountain. The hike in is not particularly steep, but it will be a bit of a workout, especially if you opt to camp out. It will take 2~3 to reach the Kuroyuri Hutte which will be our base-camp for the trip.
We will go over tent anchoring in snow with everyone and set up camp for those who are camping. After that we will begin covering our main content of actual climbing and safety skills which are necessary for safe mountain climbing in winter.
Sunday- After breakfast we'll get an early start and make our way up to the summit of Tengu-dake. This will be a great chance to make use of the techniques learned on Saturday and to climb up 2 peaks with amazing views if the weather cooperates. After reaching the summit, plan to head down via the west ridge to get back to the parking lot. If there is heavy snow or poor visibility, we will head back down via our original approach route.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
