This trip is put together to get an introduction to spring in the North Alps. There will still be some snow on approach and along the return route, but the high ridges look to be mostly snow free at this point. Tsubakuro is also in the rain shadow of the main North Alps range and often has much better weather during this season than the rest of the alps.
Fees for the mountain hut are 9,000 yen per person if you do not wish to camp, camping fees are 2,000 yen per person, these fees are in addition to the participation fee. This is a loop route ascending the main Southeast ridge up to our hut / campsite just 25 minutes from the summit. The descent route on Sunday will head north from the peak and then drop down into an alpine valley with a snowfield crossing from the Higashi-sawa pass, and head back down to the car. Total hiking time each day is approximately 5 1/2 hours.
*Hut space is secured for our group, tent space will be dependent on whether a space is available when you book. Please request in the comments when you sign up and we will make the reservation if you prefer tent.
Saturday- We'll meet early and hit the road around 6:30 a.m. and get to the trailhead about 10:00 a.m. The hike in is not particularly steep, but it will be a bit of a workout, especially if you opt to camp out. There will be some snowy sections on the way up and up on the high ridges, but this is not a technical climb and crampons are provided free of charge. The snowy sections are not steep or particularly difficult. We will camp out at the hut just below the summit, and have the option to head up to the top if the weather is good before dinner.
We'll have a big dinner before heading to bed early.
Sunday- We will watch the sunrise from the mountain hut and then prepare breakfast and coffee. Then we set out to the summit just a short distance away and begin working our way along a beautiful ridge-line. This is where we will have our biggest snow crossing likely to put on crampons for a bit. We will then descend down into the West valley and continue along the river back to our starting point.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring at the trailhead to warm up and clean up after 2 days on the mountain.
