Previous hiking on snow with crampons is a plus, but you must have significant hiking experience, and be in good physical condition to join this trip. You also need to have either 3 season mountain boots or winter mountaineering boots. Please get in touch if you have any questions about experience or equipment.
Friday night: We will meet up in Hanno and then spend the night at the Hiker's B&B so we can get an early start on Saturday.
Saturday: We will depart the B&B around 5:30 a.m. and drive to the trailhead where we will gear up for the hike. Everyone will be staying in the mountain hut, so our packs will be reasonably light. The hike to the mountain hut on top of the main ridge will take about 5 hours. We will hit snow on the way but the trail should be well beaten and easy to walk with crampons. After arriving at the hut, we'll review crampon and basic ice axe skills in advance of our climb on Sunday. The hut we will be staying in is Enzanso.
We will cook a great dinner in the hut and get to bed early as we start early the next day.
Sunday: We will get up a bit before sunrise to make a hot breakfast. After watching the sunrise over the Japanese Alps we'll begin our climb to the summit of Tsubakuro. This should only take about 1 hour to get to the top and there is not a lot of elevation gain. Also this climb is not technical. After descending we pack our bags and begin heading back down our original climbing route.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
