Tsurugi-dake was the last peak to be climbed and measured in the early 1900's. The climb to the summit is quite an adventure with plenty of chains and exposure. Tateyama is one of the 3 most sacred peaks in Japan, and is definitely a must-do peak in the North Alps due to it's natural beauty and history.
*Please note that this is the ideal itinerary, though we will have opportunities to summit Tsurugi on Sunday and Monday, and Tateyama can be summited on Saturday as well. We will adjust the climbing schedule based on the latest forecast.
Saturday:
By heading up to the mountains on Friday night, we'll be able to get an early start on the Alpine route, taking a bus through the mountain, followed by a cable car, then a rope-way and another bus. Accessing this area is not easy or cheap on your own, so we've packaged everything together into a great deal.
The hike to our base-camp at Tsurugi-sawa is only about 3 hours but we'll start off by visiting the steam and gas vents around Murodo before taking the scenic route to our basecamp to get set up.
Sunday:
This is our summit day for Tsurugi, and we'll start out early making our way up to the main summit ridge. The hike starts out fairly gentle and gradually gets a bit scrambly as we make our way up to Mae-Tsurugi peak. From there the real fun begins and we'll hit the chains on the famous Kani-Yokobai (Crab walk traverse) and then scrambling up the final rocky bits to one of the greatest summits in Japan. After spending plenty of time on top recovering, we'll head back down the way we came.
Monday:
We won't need to wake up super early this day, but after having breakfast and packing up our base-camp we'll begin hiking up to the summit of Tateyama and visiting the shrine on the summit. The views from this summit traverse are amazing, and there's nothing technical about this climb. We'll descend down the back-side of Tateyama back to Murodo ending a great loop trek. From Murodo we just reverse the alpine route, and then head to a hot spring after getting back to the van before making the drive back to Tokyo.
