Utsukushigahara (美ヶ原) is one of the 100 famous mountains, and is generally quite crowded due to easy access in summer time. We have discovered a great winter route that takes us from forest up to the treeless alpine terrain in one day. This is a great introductory winter hike, not requiring any special gear, just 3 season hiking boots. Total distance is 8km with 600 meters of elevation gained and lost.
Our route will start in the forest at the Date-ga-hara (ダテ河原) trailhead and then climb up gradually through the forest to the main ridge to head over to the peak. The upper ridge is all open alpine terrain and if the weather is good great views of the Northern and Southern Alps as well as Mt. Fuji and Yatsugatake are possible. If the snow conditions are good we will head back via a different route to get back to the start.
This hike is not technical at all, just 8 point or more crampons are needed and we will provide those at no charge for all participants who need. After the hike we will warm up at a local hot spring before heading back to Tokyo.
