This trip is a great opportunity to explore Yakushima, one of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites when it is less crowded by heading on a non-holiday weekend in the off season. November and December are also the driest months, but no guarantees we won't get rained on, so come prepared!
We'll see old growth cedars, climb the highest peak to see a 360 degree view of the entire island, and trek through untouched forest that has never seen the loggers saw.
Itinerary
Friday 11/29:
・6:25 AM - JAL 641 Flight from Haneda Airport Arriving in Kagoshima at 8:20 a.m., then we will then have to take a bus to the ferry terminal.
・10:20 AM - Jet Ferry Departs for Yakushima arriving at Anbo Port at 13:05
We will spend the afternoon visiting a couple amazing natural areas on the island starting with Yakusugi Land which has a huge number of old growth trees. We will then move on to Shiratani Unsui Gorge and then move to the Kawakami Inn in Miyanoura Port town.
Saturday 11/30:
Around 8 a.m. we will depart the inn and head for the Arakawa Trailhead which is where the trail starts for the Jomon Tsugi. The hike starts out very easy following along an old logging railroad grade passing by an old saw mill and school ground. This will cover quite a distance and at the end of the railroad grade the real climbing begins. We will pass some interesting natural sites including the Wilson Stump which you can walk inside, and then the Jomon Sugi tree. Our hiking schedule will be a bit separated from the day hiking tours so we will have these sites mostly to ourselves.
From here it's another 90 minutes hiking up hill to reach our hut for the night, the Shin-Takatsuka Hut. Total hiking time is about 5.5 hours, so we will not be rushed when visiting the sites along the way.
Sunday 12/1:
We will wake up early and have breakfast at the hut as this will be our biggest hiking day of the trip. It will take 3~3.5 hours to get to the summit of Miyanoura-dake the tallest peak on the island, and one of the 100 famous mountains. This hike is quite fun gradually moving up through different elevation zones until reaching the alpine zone and getting above tree line. This peak has 360 degree views and the walk while above tree line is absolutely amazing.
From the summit we will begin a gradual descent walking 4~4.5 hours to arrive at the Yodogawa Hut for the night. Total hiking time for this day is 7~8 hours.
Monday 12/2:
We have a short 40 minute walk to get to the end of the trail where we will have a private taxi take us back to Miyanoura in the morning. There will be time for a hot bath and souvenir shopping before catching our ferry back to Kagoshima.
10:45 a.m. - Ferry Departs from Miyanoura Port arriving in Kagoshima at 12:35 p.m.
There will be time for lunch and a little bit of exploring of the center of the city before grabbing the bus back to the airport.
16:05 p.m. - JAL Flight 650 from Kagoshima back to Haneda airport arriving at 5:45 p.m.

We went back in December of 2013, and here are the photos from that trip.
