*Please keep 4 days available for this trip, but we will depart on either the 28th or the 29th based on the weather forecast.
We are planning to head to the North Alps to climb one of the great classic alpine ridges in Japan. Though not technically difficult, it is a long approach and climb, and the weather and snow conditions can certainly turn this mountain into a real epic. Previous snow hiking experience is required to join as well as all of the appropriate equipment.
Thursday- We need to depart early to beat the new year traffic out of Tokyo and get to the trail-head at a decent time.
We'll meet up early and have coffee and breakfast along the way to the trailhead and after dividing up group gear, we'll start making the trek to Yari-daira which will be our base-camp for the trip. The walk in will take about 5 hours and is generally a gentle walk with a steep climb near the end. The plan is to camp out in the emergency hut at Yari-daira, but if it is too crowded we will be carrying tents as well.
Friday- We will wake up around 3 a.m. and start making breakfast, and preparing for the climb, with a plan to depart the hut no later than 4:30 a.m. We'll only take what we need for the day so we can climb light and fast. The initial climb up to Nakazaki Ridge is strenuous and steep, but not technical. Once we reach the ridge, the climb will become a bit more gentle as we traverse the ridge and eventually meet up with the main West ridge and continue working our way up to the main pyramid of Yari.
The final part of the ascent will be a mix of rock scrambling and chains and ladders with crampons on, and is really exciting. After taking our summit photos, we'll head back down the way we came to the hut and have a big dinner and get lots of rest.
Saturday- We don't have to get up too early, but after breakfast we'll pack up all of our gear and head back to the car and hit a hot spring before making the drive back to Tokyo getting back home at a decent time, so you can enjoy the remainder of the New Year Holiday.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
Brief description of backup plan is below.

Unfortunately the weather in the North Alps is very unpredictable and can be very dangerous if we choose to go into that weather. Getting back home safely is our top priority above getting to the summit, so keeping that in mind, we also have come up with an amazing back up plan in the Southern Alps in the event that the weather in the North Alps looks too dangerous for a safe ascent.
