We are planning to head to the North Alps to climb one of the great classic alpine ridges in Japan. Though not technically difficult, it is a long approach and climb, and the weather and snow conditions can certainly turn this mountain into a real epic. Previous snow hiking experience is required to join as well as all of the appropriate equipment.
Tuesday Night- We will meet up at Fuchu station and then head out to the North Alps and camp closer to the trailhead.
Wednesday - We'll get up early have breakfast and after dividing up group gear, we'll start making the trek to Yari-daira which will be our base-camp for the trip. The walk in will take about 5 hours and is generally a gentle walk with a steep climb near the end. The plan is to camp out on the snow next to the Yari-daira hut. We will also review snow safety skills for using ice axe and crampons.
Yari-daira will be our base camp for 2 nights, so no need to carry heavy luggage up high.
Thursday- We will wake up around 4 a.m. and start making breakfast, and preparing for the climb, with a plan to depart camp no later than 5:00 a.m. We'll only take what we need for the day so we can climb light and fast. The intial climb up to Nakazaki Ridge is strenuous and steep, but not technical. Once we reach the ridge, the climb will become a bit more gentle as we traverse the ridge and eventually meet up with the main West ridge and continue working our way up to the main pyramid of Yari.
The final part of the ascent will be a mix of rock scrambling and chains and ladders with crampons on, and is really exciting. After taking our summit photos, we'll head back down via the Yari-daira valley glissading on sleds making the descent super fast and fun.
Friday- We don't have to get up too early, but after breakfast we'll pack up all of our gear and head back to the car and hit a hot spring before making the drive back to Tokyo getting back home at a decent time, so you can enjoy the remainder of the Golden Week Holiday.
Saturday the 6th is also reserved in case the weather forecast requires us to adjust the trip schedule by a day. Also in the event the route is inaccessible due to avalanche or other issues, we will make the climb from Kamikochi, using Yarisawa camp.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
