*This trip also is timed for the peak of the Geminids Meteor Shower, the biggest meteor shower of the year. Great opportunities for star watching on this trip.
Friday night: We will meet up in Hanno and then spend the night at the Hiker's B&B so we can get an early start on Saturday.
Saturday: We will depart the B&B around 5:30 a.m. and drive to Minoto-guchi where we will gear up for the easy approach to Aka-dake Kousen Hut which will take about 1 1/2 hours. After establishing our base camp next to the hut at we will start up Io-dake, a smaller peak in the Yatsuga-dake range, stopping along the way to practice crampon use, self-arrest with ice ax from multiple positions, and self belay. Tent and dinner are provided. Mountain hut lodging is also an option for an extra fee.
Day 2: This day will start with an early breakfast, and we'll then gear up for an ascent of Aka-dake, the highest peak in the Yatsuga-dake range at 2,899 Meters. Our ascent will be via the Jizo Ridge, starting out in the trees and working our way up climbing up steep snow faces, and finishing the ridge on a short knife ridge with amazing views. After having a short break at the hut, we'll head up the final ridge up to the summit of Aka-dake. The descent route will be a different less steep route, and after packing up our camp, we'll warm up in a local onsen before making the drive back to Tokyo.
Winter Climbing Skills Content
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
