We are looking to get the most out of the last bit of winter at Yatsugadake, and have planned an exciting trip. Mountaineering skills practice and a classic winter mountain traverse all in one weekend. Check out last year's photos here!
Saturday- We'll depart early from Tokyo and then begin the easy approach hike up to Aka-dake Kosen which will be our base for the weekend. For those wishing to camp we'll set up tents before lunch and those staying in the hut can drop off their gear and hot lunch is also available from the hut. The afternoon will be spent practicing specific mountaineering skills to get ready for our traverse on Sunday. These skills include extensive ice axe self arrest practice from multiple positions, crampon work including French Technique and front pointing, and ice axe techniques including self belay and low dagger positions.
After practicing dinner will be either in the hut or in the camp site. Please note meals are not included but we can arrange something for you for a small fee.
Camping or mountain hut fees are not included and the fees are as follows:
-Hut with 2 meals - 12,000 yen +1,000 yen private room fee for our group
-Hut no meals - 9,000 yen +1,000 yen private room fee
-Camping - 2,000 yen per person - Meals are available from the hut for an additional fee as well
Sunday- We will wake up around 5 a.m. have breakfast and then start up Io-dake around 6 a.m. which is a relatively simple climb, and reach the summit around 7:30 a.m. After this first summit we will work our way across the rim and then begin the exciting traverse across Yoko-dake which features some great exposure and rock scrambles which will make you feel like a hard-core mountaineer (though nothing too technical). There are chains general exposed to aid in the ascent with new ones added last year that usually remain out of the snow.
After taking a break below the summit of Aka-dake, we'll head up to the summit and then down Jizo ridge and back to our campsite. We'll clear out our campsite and then head down.
After getting off the mountain, we'll head straight to a local hot spring to warm up after 2 days in the snow.
**You are also required to purchase mountaineering rescue insurance before participating in this trip. We can provide names of providers and help you through the application process.
